European chicken flea

The European chicken flea (Ceratophyllus gallinae) is a significant ectoparasite belonging to the order Siphonaptera and the family Ceratophyllidae. Although it is not a direct pest of agricultural crops, it acts as a major threat to the poultry industry by severely compromising the health and productivity of avian flocks in both backyard and commercial operations.

This parasite primarily targets domestic chickens, turkeys, and ducks, though it is also known to infest wild birds and various mammals. The fleas are typically found in the birds' nests, roosting areas, and deep litter, where they hide and feed on the blood of their hosts. Their presence often goes unnoticed until the infestation levels become critical, leading to substantial stress for the livestock.

The biology of Ceratophyllus gallinae involves a life cycle consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Unlike many other parasites, the larvae develop in the debris, dust, and organic material found in poultry housing rather than on the host's body. Warm and humid conditions in a poultry house provide the perfect environment for the rapid development of these flea populations throughout the year.

The damage caused by these parasites is extensive. Bites cause intense itching, which leads to birds pecking at their own feathers and causing skin inflammation or secondary infections. Furthermore, chronic blood loss leads to anemia, significantly reduced egg production, poor weight gain in broilers, and general immune system suppression, which increases susceptibility to various diseases.

Control measures are essential for maintaining a healthy flock and require diligent management:

• Strict sanitation practices, including the regular removal and replacement of nest litter.
• Thorough cleaning and disinfection of the poultry house using approved insecticidal products.
• Application of specialized veterinary-approved treatments directly to the birds when necessary.
• Preventative monitoring of nesting areas to detect flea populations early and prevent major outbreaks.
