This insect is a specialized ectoparasite typically associated with the nests of swallows, particularly the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica). While not a pest of crops, it is classified as a nuisance pest in agricultural settings, particularly in poultry farming, where it can compromise animal welfare.

The biology of this species is tied to its host's nesting behavior. The flea's life cycle involves eggs, three larval stages, pupae, and adults. Larvae reside in the nest material, feeding on organic debris and dried blood excreted by adult fleas. This environment provides the necessary microclimate for rapid development, and adults are known for their ability to survive long periods of starvation while awaiting host arrival.

The harm caused by these parasites is primarily due to blood-feeding, which leads to physical stress and exhaustion in birds. Excessive infestation triggers chronic itching, severe skin irritation, and dermatitis, which negatively impact the weight gain and general health of poultry. Furthermore, the presence of these fleas often indicates poor sanitary conditions in farm buildings located near bird nesting sites.

Damage assessment typically includes identifying inflamed skin patches and signs of anaemia in infested birds. Beyond direct feeding, Ceratophyllus rusticus can act as a vector for various avian pathogens, complicating the health status of farm flocks. The rapid multiplication of these fleas in warm, humid conditions makes them a persistent issue if left unmonitored during the nesting season.

Protection strategies focus on hygiene and exclusion. Physical barriers should be implemented to prevent wild swallows from entering poultry housing areas. Effective management includes regular removal of old nests and thorough cleaning of structures. Chemical control measures involve using registered insecticides to treat poultry houses and, when necessary, applying veterinary-approved products directly to the birds to manage the parasite population effectively.
