Bird flea

Ceratophyllus garei is a species of flea belonging to the family Ceratophyllidae (order Siphonaptera). Unlike agricultural pests that attack crops, this organism is a significant ectoparasite in the poultry industry. It typically inhabits bird nests, bedding, and litter, creating major challenges for flock health management in both small-scale and commercial farming environments.

The biology of this flea is characterized by a complex life cycle involving eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adult fleas feed on the blood of the avian host. However, the larvae are not parasitic; they thrive in the nest environment, feeding on organic debris, skin dander, and the fecal pellets of adult fleas which contain undigested blood proteins.

Once favorable environmental conditions return—often triggered by the heat and vibration of a new flock—the fleas emerge rapidly, ensuring their survival even during periods when the host population is absent.

The economic impact of Ceratophyllus garei is driven by the physical and physiological stress inflicted on the birds. Infestation causes persistent itching, skin lesions, and restlessness. Heavy burdens can lead to severe anemia, immunosuppression, and significantly reduced egg production or weight gain in meat birds, negatively affecting the farm's profitability.
