Ceratophyllus styx is a species of ectoparasitic insect belonging to the order Siphonaptera (fleas) and the family Ceratophyllidae. It is a specialist parasite primarily associated with house martin nests. While it does not affect crops directly, this insect is a nuisance in agricultural settings, affecting the sanitary conditions of farm buildings, sheds, and structures occupied by birds.

The biology of this species is highly dependent on the nesting season of birds. Adult fleas inhabit the nesting material, where they feed on the host's blood, while larvae thrive in the debris composed of organic matter, feathers, and fecal material. They require stable microclimatic conditions, typically found within the protected space of a nest, to complete their development.

The life cycle encompasses egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The pupal stage is particularly resilient, allowing the fleas to survive through unfavorable conditions when the hosts are absent. Once the birds return to their nesting sites, the adult fleas emerge from the cocoons in response to vibrations and heat, ready to parasitize the birds again.

A massive flea infestation can spread throughout farm buildings, potentially biting other animals or humans. This causes significant irritation, skin conditions, and stress, which indirectly impacts the productivity of animals kept in contaminated facilities.
