Description

The Buffalo treehopper (Ceresa albidosparsa) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Membracidae family. These insects are easily recognized by their unique thoracic structure, which often extends into a horn-like or shield-like shape, providing excellent camouflage against twigs and leaves.

This pest primarily affects a variety of fruit-bearing trees, including apple, pear, and plum species. It is also known to infest various woody shrubs and ornamental plants. The treehopper is particularly damaging to young nursery trees where the integrity of the bark is crucial for structural development.

The life cycle involves eggs overwintering under the bark of twigs. In the spring, nymphs emerge and begin feeding on sap. Both adults and nymphs possess piercing-sucking mouthparts, which they use to extract nutrients from the phloem of host plants, leading to a general decline in plant vigor.

The most significant damage is caused by the female's oviposition process. To lay eggs, she creates deep, crescent-shaped slits in the bark of young branches. These wounds can disrupt sap flow, leading to stunted growth, branch dieback, and an increased risk of secondary infections by pathogens and wood-rotting fungi.
