Ceresa vitulus

The treehopper Ceresa vitulus belongs to the Membracidae family within the order Hemiptera. Recognizable by the distinct dorsal projection on its pronotum, this insect is a notorious pest in various agricultural sectors. Its ability to feed on sap and damage plant tissues makes it a significant concern for orchard management and nursery production.

Ceresa vitulus primarily affects woody plants, with a strong preference for pome and stone fruit trees. Apples, pears, and cherries are frequently infested by these insects. Beyond commercial orchards, they also target a variety of woody shrubs and ornamental plants, causing stress to the vegetation through relentless sap-sucking activity.

The life history of this insect typically involves overwintering as eggs inserted into the bark of young twigs. Following the spring emergence, the nymphs pass through several instars while feeding on the plant. By the time they reach maturity, they have caused cumulative physiological damage to the host, resulting in stunted growth and reduced fruit yield.

The most severe damage is caused by the oviposition process. When females lay their eggs, they create deep slits in the bark, which disrupt the plant's vascular system. These physical wounds not only cause mechanical weakness in the stems but also serve as entry points for pathogens, leading to canker diseases and secondary infections that may kill young branches.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize population pressure on the crops. Recommended strategies include:
