Description

Cerococcus species belong to the family Cerococcidae (wax scales) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are distinguished by the fact that females create a dense, waxy protective test (cocoon) during their development, which can vary in color from yellowish to reddish-brown. Systematically, they are closely related to true scale insects but differ in the structure of their wax glands and the specific shape of the test.

This pest primarily infests woody plants and shrubs, including both ornamental varieties (such as hibiscus and oleander) and fruit trees. They are most frequently found in tropical and subtropical regions; however, when introduced with nursery stock, they can successfully adapt to greenhouse conditions in more temperate climates.

The life cycle of Cerococcus involves the egg stage, the mobile crawler stage, and the sedentary adult stage. Once fertilized, the females remain immobile, firmly attached to the bark or the underside of leaves. The crawlers (first-instar nymphs) are the only active stage capable of dispersing across the plant or being carried by wind currents to neighboring hosts.

The primary damage is caused by the extraction of sap from the plant's vascular tissues. In areas of feeding, one can observe shoot deformation, premature leaf drop, and overall suppression of plant growth. Furthermore, during heavy infestations, the pests excrete honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold, subsequently reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis.

  • Mechanical removal of waxy tests from tree bark.
  • Application of systemic insecticides during the peak crawler emergence period.
  • Use of horticultural mineral oils to smother the pest.
  • Encouraging the presence of natural biological control agents (parasitic wasps).

Comprehensive protection requires regular monitoring of bark conditions throughout the growing season. Since the waxy layer of the test provides significant protection for the female against many contact pesticides, the key task for an agronomist is to apply treatments precisely during the mass emergence of young crawlers that have not yet developed their own waxy armor.
