Description
Dekle's Cerococcus (scientific name Cerococcus deklei) is a member of the Cerococcidae family, commonly known as wax scales. This pest is a significant concern for horticulturists due to its ability to remain hidden while sapping the vitality of host plants through persistent feeding.
The primary hosts for this species include various ornamental woody plants, particularly those in the Hibiscus genus. Infestations are often detected by the presence of waxy tests on the stems and branches, which effectively shield the females from predators and many conventional pesticide treatments.
The life cycle involves a highly specialized developmental path. After hatching, the mobile crawlers move across the plant surface to find suitable feeding sites. Once they settle, they undergo metamorphosis and secrete a waxy covering that becomes their permanent protective barrier for the remainder of their adult life.
Feeding activity causes substantial physiological stress to the plant. Symptoms include stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and branch dieback. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and interferes with the plant's photosynthetic capabilities, further exacerbating the damage.
