Description
Coffee cerococcus (Cerococcus coffeae) is a scale insect belonging to the family Cerococcidae, order Hemiptera. It is primarily known as a significant pest of coffee plants (Coffea spp.), causing economic losses in tropical coffee-growing regions by colonizing the woody and soft parts of the trees.
The biology of this species is characterized by the presence of a waxy test covering the female, which provides a high degree of protection against environmental stressors and contact pesticides. Like many other Coccids, the female remains sessile once she establishes her feeding site on the host plant.
The life cycle typically includes egg, nymphal (crawler), and adult stages. The crawler stage is the primary mobile phase, during which the insects disperse to new sites on the plant or are carried to neighboring trees by wind, rain, or human activities during agricultural maintenance.
Damage symptoms include leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and twig dieback. The infestation is often accompanied by the growth of sooty mold, which feeds on the honeydew excreted by the insects. This mold covers the leaves, hindering photosynthesis and eventually leading to reduced fruit yields.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for control. This includes removing and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local populations, fostering the presence of natural predators and parasitoids, and applying systemic insecticides strategically during the crawler stage to prevent new infestations.
