Description

The Portulaca weevil (Ceutorhynchus portulacae) is a specialized insect species belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This weevil is strictly associated with plants of the Portulacaceae family, primarily common purslane (Portulaca oleracea), which acts as both a host and a breeding ground for this pest.

The damage caused by this pest is mainly attributed to its larval stage. While adult weevils feed on the leaves by creating small, round feeding punctures, it is the larvae that cause the most significant harm by mining into the stems and succulent tissues of the plant. This mining activity disrupts vascular integrity and plant development.

The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering typically occurs in the soil or within protective plant debris near the host area. With the arrival of warmer temperatures, adults emerge, mate, and deposit eggs, potentially producing multiple generations throughout the growing season.

Typical symptoms of infestation include stunted growth, chlorosis, and the wilting of stems. In cases of severe infestation, the plant may lose its structural integrity and die back prematurely. This is particularly problematic in organic production or areas where purslane is cultivated as a commercial vegetable or decorative crop.

Management strategies focus on an integrated approach to minimize population pressure:

  • cultural control through aggressive weed management;
  • proper disposal of infested plant material to break the pest cycle;
  • application of appropriate insecticides during the adult emergence phase;
  • deep cultivation of the soil post-harvest to expose overwintering pupae to cold and predators.
