The Cypress spurge clearwing (Chamaesphecia erythrucephala) is a moth species belonging to the family Sesiidae, order Lepidoptera. It is recognized for its clear-winged appearance, which mimics various stinging wasps, providing it with a natural defense mechanism against potential avian predators.

This insect is primarily associated with plants of the genus Euphorbia (spurge). In its native range, it acts as a specialized herbivore. In some regions of the world, it has been introduced or studied as a biological control agent to manage invasive spurge populations that threaten native pastures and rangelands.

The life cycle of Chamaesphecia erythrucephala is characterized by a univoltine or sometimes bivoltine development, depending on climatic conditions. The larvae bore into the crown and roots of the spurge plant. This larval stage is the most destructive phase, as the caterpillars spend their entire development hidden within the vascular tissues.

Damage caused by this pest is significant for the host plant's vitality. The tunneling activity inside the roots disrupts the flow of water and nutrients. Externally, this presents as stunted growth, wilting of the shoots, and, in cases of high infestation, the eventual death of the plant due to structural and physiological failure.

Management strategies focus on cultural and biological practices. As it is often used as a control agent, chemical eradication is rarely practiced on targeted invasive weeds. However, in gardens or nurseries where ornamental Euphorbia is grown, control involves the removal of infested plants and ensuring soil hygiene to disrupt the pupation environment.
