Systematic position: The heather ladybird (Chilocorus bipustulatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Coccinellidae. While many members of this family are recognized as beneficial predators, specific species in the genus Chilocorus can sometimes cause significant issues in orchards and forests depending on environmental factors and population density.

Host crops: This pest primarily affects woody plants and shrubs. Its host range includes fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as various ornamental shrubs. It thrives in environments where host trees provide sufficient food and shelter, often becoming a significant concern in nurseries and neglected orchards.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in protected areas, such as bark crevices, leaf litter, or debris at the base of trees. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed and mate. Depending on the local climate, the species can produce multiple generations per year, making it a persistent threat throughout the growing season.

Damage and economic significance: The damage is characterized by adult and larval feeding on foliage, which leads to defoliation and weakened plant growth. In severe cases, the reduction in leaf area limits the tree's photosynthetic capacity, which directly results in lower fruit yields and inferior fruit quality. Young trees are particularly susceptible to stunted development following heavy infestations.
