Kidney-spot ladybird

The Kidney-spot ladybird (Chilocorus renipustulatus) is a member of the ladybird family (Coccinellidae), order Coleoptera. Contrary to being a pest, this insect is a highly beneficial predator (entomophage) that plays a critical role in controlling scale insects and soft scales, which are major pests in orchards and woodland environments.

The beetle feeds on various species of Coccidae. Its primary prey includes the apple mussel scale and other scale insects that infest the bark and branches of fruit trees such as apple, pear, plum, and various ornamental shrubs. By consuming both larvae and adult scale insects, it significantly reduces the pressure on host trees.

The life cycle of Chilocorus renipustulatus typically involves one or two generations per year. The adults overwinter in sheltered locations, such as deep cracks in tree bark or under thick layers of leaf litter. With the arrival of spring, they emerge to mate and lay eggs in close proximity to scale insect colonies, ensuring an immediate food supply for the emerging larvae.

Larvae pass through several developmental stages (instars) while feeding voraciously on the prey. Both the adult and larval stages are specialized predators. Their distinct black appearance with two red spots makes them relatively easy to identify in the field. They are effective at suppressing pest outbreaks naturally without the need for human intervention.

From an agronomic perspective, no control measures are needed against this species as it is an ally to the farmer. To support its population, it is advised to avoid the prophylactic use of broad-spectrum insecticides. Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) strategies that prioritize the preservation of such natural enemies is essential for sustainable orchard health.
