Chlorophorus quinquefasciatus

Systematic position. Chlorophorus quinquefasciatus belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles. It is a specialized wood-boring insect that targets various deciduous trees, particularly those that are already under stress or declining in health.

Host plants. This pest primarily infests fruit and ornamental trees. Key host species include apple (Malus), pear (Pyrus), walnut (Juglans), and various species of oak (Quercus). It is frequently found in neglected orchards where trees are not properly maintained or protected against trunk damage.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles emerge during the warmer months and are often seen feeding on pollen or nectar. Females oviposit in bark crevices. The larvae bore into the inner bark and sapwood, where they feed extensively and construct galleries, which is the stage responsible for the primary damage to the host.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The larvae cause severe damage by creating tunnels that sever the phloem and xylem, disrupting the tree’s water and nutrient transport system. Affected branches typically exhibit signs of wilting, premature yellowing, and thinning of the foliage. Eventually, heavy infestations lead to the death of affected branches or the entire tree.

Protection measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this beetle. Preventive measures include regular pruning, proper sanitation of the orchard, and maintaining tree vigor through adequate fertilization and irrigation. Chemical control with systemic insecticides may be necessary during the peak adult flight period. Severely infested limbs should be promptly removed and destroyed to reduce the local population density.
