Description

Chlorophorus sartor is a member of the Cerambycidae family within the order Coleoptera. Commonly referred to as a longhorn beetle, this insect is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that primarily attacks weakened deciduous trees and shrubs.

This beetle species affects a variety of host plants, including valuable fruit trees like apple, pear, and plum, as well as forest trees such as oak, beech, and walnut. The presence of the pest is often correlated with poor tree vitality, mechanical injuries, or damage caused by environmental factors like frost and sunscald.

The biology of Chlorophorus sartor involves a typical life cycle for wood-boring beetles. Adults emerge during the summer months and are frequently seen visiting flowers to feed on pollen. Females deposit eggs into cracks in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel under the bark, feeding on the cambium layer and creating intricate galleries in the sapwood.

Damage caused by the larvae disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, leading to branch dieback, reduced fruit yield, and general tree decline. The presence of fine sawdust (frass) near the bark surface or small exit holes in the wood are primary diagnostic indicators of an infestation in affected plantations.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain plant health and prevent beetle colonization:

  • removing and destroying infested wood to eliminate breeding sites;
  • treating mechanical wounds on trunks with grafting wax or professional sealants;
  • whitewashing tree trunks to protect against sunscald and discourage egg-laying;
  • implementing monitoring with pheromone or sticky traps during the active adult flight period.
