Description

Systematic position: Chlorophorus strobilicola belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae (longhorn beetles). It is a specialized pest that has evolved to complete its life cycle within the cones of coniferous trees, particularly pines.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets various species of the genus Pinus. Its impact is most significant in pine seed orchards and forest nurseries, where the loss of seeds directly affects the success of reforestation efforts.

Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles are active during the day, feeding on plant pollen. Females oviposit on the surface of developing cones. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the cone, feeding on internal scales and developing seeds. The entire larval development and pupation occur within the cone, protecting the insect from environmental stress.

Nature of damage: Larval feeding destroys the internal architecture of the cone. This damage often results in premature cone drop, deformation, or the complete destruction of viable seeds. Infested cones are easily distinguished by the presence of entry/exit holes and internal debris, rendering them useless for commercial seed collection.

Management strategies: Effective control relies on cultural practices. Eliminating the source of infestation by removing and burning damaged cones prevents the next generation of beetles from emerging. While chemical insecticides can be used in specialized nursery settings, integrated pest management focused on habitat hygiene remains the most sustainable approach.
