Description

Choristoneura lambertiana, commonly known as the Lambert's pine moth, is a notable defoliating pest within the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This insect primarily targets various species of conifers, showing a strong preference for members of the genus Pinus. Its role in forestry is significant, as it can cause widespread defoliation, leading to growth loss and weakening of the host trees.

The host range of this pest primarily includes lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and other related pine species. Larvae feed aggressively on needles, often targeting both old and current-year foliage. In cases of severe outbreaks, the caterpillars may also feed on the interior of male and female cones, significantly impacting seed production and forest regeneration efforts in affected areas.

Regarding its biological life cycle, the Lambert's pine moth typically completes one generation per year. Adults emerge during the summer months to mate and oviposit on the host needles. Upon hatching, the larvae construct silk-lined webs or tubes among the foliage to protect themselves while they feed. These larvae often enter dormancy for the winter months, hiding in protective structures such as bark crevices or hibernacula built on the branches.

The extent of damage is manifested by the destruction of the photosynthetic surface of the tree. Heavily infested branches show signs of web-spinning, frass accumulation, and chlorotic, dying needles that eventually drop. This loss of foliage reduces the tree's vigor, making it susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles or wood-boring insects, which can eventually lead to mortality in extreme infestation scenarios.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies to mitigate damage include:

  • monitoring adult populations using pheromone-baited traps during the flight period;
  • timing insecticide applications to coincide with the early larval stage;
  • utilizing biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which are effective against lepidopteran larvae;
  • removing heavily infested branches during pruning in managed landscapes;
  • preserving natural predator habitats to support a sustainable population of parasitic wasps and birds.
