Description
The Western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive defoliators of coniferous forests in Western North America, capable of causing widespread damage during outbreak periods.
This pest primarily attacks coniferous tree species, with a strong preference for Douglas-fir, grand fir, white fir, and Engelmann spruce. The larvae cause significant ecological and economic impact by defoliating vast areas of forest, often resulting in tree mortality after several consecutive years of severe infestation.
The life cycle is univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Development starts with overwintering larvae in small protective silken cases known as hibernacula. In the spring, they emerge to feed on developing buds and needles. By mid-summer, the larvae reach the pupal stage, and shortly thereafter, the adult moths emerge to mate and lay eggs.
The damage is characterized by the consumption of new foliage, which gives the forest canopy a reddish appearance from a distance. The webbing created by larvae ties needles together, often causing them to drop prematurely. Prolonged infestation leads to top-killing of trees, growth loss, and increased susceptibility to other biotic and abiotic stress factors.
Management and control strategies are essential for reducing forest damage. Key practices include:
- aerial application of biological insecticides like Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt);
- monitoring population trends using pheromone traps;
- conducting silvicultural treatments to manage forest density and composition;
- encouraging the population of natural predators and parasitoids.
