Description

The Jack pine budworm (Choristoneura pinus) is a prominent defoliator belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting pine forests, particularly throughout North America.

The primary host for this species is the Jack pine (Pinus banksiana). However, when the population density reaches outbreak levels, the larvae can spill over to infest other susceptible pine species, causing widespread damage within their native range.

The insect typically completes one generation per year. Development begins in late summer when the first-instar larvae emerge and spin hibernacula on the bark to overwinter. Upon emergence in the spring, larvae bore into male flowers and developing buds to feed.

Feeding damage involves webbing needles together and consuming foliage. In severe infestation scenarios, the budworm causes significant defoliation, which stunts growth, promotes secondary infection by opportunistic pathogens, and frequently leads to tree mortality over extensive forest tracts.

Integrated pest management strategies involve systematic monitoring through pheromone trapping and aerial surveys to identify early outbreak clusters. Control measures include:
