The Choristoneura viridis, commonly known as the green budworm, is a species of moth within the Tortricidae family. It is recognized as a significant pest affecting coniferous forests, where its larvae feed on the foliage and buds of host trees, potentially causing extensive damage to forest stands.

The pest primarily targets coniferous tree species, particularly those of the Abies (fir) and Picea (spruce) genera. By feeding on the new growth, the larvae severely stress the host plant, leading to reduced photosynthesis, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to secondary infestations or diseases.

The biology and lifecycle of this moth follow a typical holometabolous development process. The larvae typically emerge in the spring, coinciding with bud burst. After feeding and maturing, they enter the pupal stage, usually within the webbed foliage, before emerging as adult moths to mate and lay eggs for the next generation.

Damage symptoms include webbed needles, chlorosis, and premature needle drop. The larvae construct distinct feeding shelters by tying needles together with silk. High-density populations can result in severe defoliation, giving the tree canopy a thin, scorched appearance that is characteristic of budworm outbreaks.

Effective management strategies require integrated pest management (IPM) techniques. These include monitoring population density using pheromone traps, applying targeted biological insecticides such as Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) to minimize environmental impact, and fostering natural enemy populations like parasitic wasps that keep the pest numbers in check.
