Chrysaora quinquecirrha, commonly known as the Atlantic sea nettle, is a scyphozoan jellyfish from the order Semaeostomeae and the family Pelagiidae. While not a conventional agricultural pest of terrestrial crops, its role as a disruptor in coastal agricultural zones and aquaculture facilities is significant for resource management.
The life cycle of this organism involves both a motile medusa stage and a sedentary polyp stage. The polyp stage (scyphistoma) is particularly resilient, allowing the species to persist in various environmental conditions and reproduce asexually, ensuring rapid population growth when conditions become favorable.
In aquaculture, the Atlantic sea nettle acts as a major predator. It consumes large quantities of zooplankton, fish eggs, and larvae, effectively competing with and destroying the commercial stock of fish and shellfish farms.
