Pelagia noctiluca, commonly known as the mauve stinger, is a scyphozoan jellyfish belonging to the order Semaeostomeae and the family Pelagiidae. While it is a marine organism, it represents an indirect but significant threat to coastal agricultural operations that rely on seawater intake for cooling systems, desalination, or irrigation of salt-tolerant crops.

The primary agricultural threat posed by this species is the obstruction of water intake systems. During massive blooms, the biomass of these jellyfish can overwhelm intake screens, clogging pumps and irrigation pipes. This causes a sudden cessation of water supply, which is critical for field crops during peak summer heat, leading to rapid dehydration and biomass loss.

The biology of Pelagia noctiluca is unique as it lacks a benthic polyp stage in its lifecycle. It remains holoplanktonic throughout its development, making its distribution entirely dependent on marine currents. This volatility prevents farmers from easily predicting when their water intake infrastructure will be compromised, necessitating constant vigilance.

The damage profile includes both physical and chemical components. The mass accumulation of jellyfish leads to the rapid decay of organic matter within pipes, which can introduce harmful bacteria and degrade water quality. If this polluted water reaches the root zone of sensitive plants, it can disrupt nutrient uptake and cause physiological stress, indirectly reducing total yield.

Effective defense strategies focus on engineering and operational protocols. Farmers should utilize:
