Oriental latrine fly

The Oriental latrine fly (Chrysomya megacephala) is a member of the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. Known for its distinct metallic blue-green appearance, this species is globally recognized as a significant urban and agricultural pest that compromises food quality and plant health through the transmission of pathogens.

In agricultural environments, this pest primarily affects ripening vegetable crops and fruits, especially those that have already sustained minor damage or are beginning to decay. By attracted to the odors of organic breakdown, these flies land on produce such as tomatoes and soft fruits, creating ideal conditions for secondary bacterial and fungal colonization.

The biological lifecycle of Chrysomya megacephala is highly efficient. The species undergoes a complete metamorphosis involving egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Under optimal temperature and humidity conditions, the entire development cycle can be completed in as little as 7 to 14 days, leading to a rapid population growth that poses constant pressure on vulnerable crops.

Damage caused by this insect is both direct and indirect. While larvae may feed on organic tissues, the primary concern for farmers is the role of the adult fly as a vector for pathogens. These flies transfer microorganisms onto healthy fruit surfaces, accelerating the spoilage process and significantly reducing the shelf-life and marketability of the harvested produce.

Effective management strategies require a focus on environmental hygiene and exclusion methods:
