Hairy maggot blowfly

Systematic position: Chrysomya rufifacies belongs to the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae (blowflies). It is a well-known species, often recognized by its metallic green or blue appearance. This fly is highly adapted to scavenging and, in its larval stage, is known for its predatory habits towards other dipteran larvae within decaying organic matter.

Crops and livestock affected: This species is primarily a pest of the livestock industry rather than field crops. It poses a significant threat to animal welfare, particularly affecting cattle, sheep, and goats. The larvae are notorious for causing myiasis, which is the infestation of live vertebrate animals with dipterous larvae, leading to severe economic losses for farmers due to reduced meat, wool, and milk production.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is typical of calliphorids, passing through egg, three larval instars, pupal, and adult stages. The flies are highly attracted to fresh or decaying carcasses, as well as necrotic tissue on living animals. The development rate is highly dependent on ambient temperature, allowing the species to complete multiple generations quickly in warm climates, which facilitates rapid population explosions.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: The primary harm occurs when the larvae feed on the living tissue of host animals. This causes deep wounds, severe inflammation, and potential septic infections. Beyond direct damage, the adult flies are significant vectors for various pathogens, including bacteria that cause diseases in livestock. The stress caused to animals by constant fly harassment also negatively impacts their overall growth and reproductive performance.

Protection measures: Effective control requires an integrated approach to sanitation and farm management:

• Stringent hygiene practices, including prompt removal and disposal of carcasses.
• Regular inspection of livestock for signs of strike or wounds.
• Application of topical insecticides to prevent oviposition on animals.
• Strategic use of traps and bait stations to reduce the population of adult flies around pens and barns.
