Deer fly

Deer flies (genus Chrysops) are members of the Tabanidae family within the order Diptera. These insects are distinguished by their bright, iridescent eyes, often marked with a zigzag pattern, and dark, cloudy patches on their wings. They are well-known to farmers and hikers as aggressive biters that frequent woodland edges and wetland areas.

While adult deer flies obtain energy from plant nectar, the females are persistent blood-feeders. They prioritize large mammals, including cattle, horses, and deer, as their hosts. By causing severe annoyance and physical trauma to livestock, they significantly disrupt natural grazing patterns and overall herd health.

The life cycle of the deer fly is highly dependent on moist environments. Females deposit clusters of dark eggs on vegetation overhanging water or muddy soil. Upon hatching, the larvae drop into the wet substrate, where they develop through several instars. They thrive in marshy habitats, making control efforts in large pastures particularly challenging.

The economic impact is primarily veterinary and secondary agricultural. A single bite from a Chrysops female causes sharp pain, as they possess specialized mouthparts designed to lacerate the skin. Beyond the stress, weight loss, and reduced milk yield in cattle, they are documented mechanical vectors for diseases such as tularemia and various blood parasites.

Management and control strategies include the following methods:

• Application of pyrethroid-based pour-on insecticides to protect livestock during the peak summer season.
• Deployment of trap devices (like the H-trap or sticky silhouette traps) that mimic the movement and silhouette of a host animal.
• Management of wetland areas by clearing vegetation to remove egg-laying sites near livestock facilities.
• Providing shaded barns or structures for animals to retreat to during the peak hours of fly activity.
