These flies are widely recognized for their distinct mottled wing patterns and are frequently encountered in damp, marshy areas, near ponds, and on rural pastures during the warmer months of the year.

While adult males feed exclusively on plant nectar, females require protein-rich blood meals to produce eggs. Their primary targets include large mammals such as horses and cattle. When attacking, they use their specialized mouthparts to pierce the skin, which is notoriously painful and often leaves lasting irritation for the host.

The life history of this species is tied closely to aquatic or semi-aquatic environments. Females deposit clusters of eggs on the leaves of plants near water. Upon hatching, the predatory larvae develop in wet soil or organic mud.
