Description

Systematic position. The maize leafhopper (Cicadulina zeae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a highly specialized herbivore that predominantly feeds on cereal crops, posing a serious threat to maize production in several tropical and subtropical agricultural regions globally.

Crops and damage. This pest primarily infests maize, sorghum, millet, and various wild grasses. Both nymphs and adults feed by sucking sap from the leaves, causing chlorosis, leaf stunting, and overall plant weakness. The physical damage often results in reduced vigor, stunted stalks, and significant yield loss if the infestation is heavy during the early growth stages.

Vector significance. The most critical aspect of Cicadulina zeae is its ability to transmit the Maize Streak Virus (MSV). This viral disease is devastating, causing distinctive yellow streaks on the leaves and severely limiting the plant's ability to produce cobs. The transmission happens quickly as the leafhopper feeds, making even small populations of this pest extremely dangerous for corn crops.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females typically deposit their eggs into the leaf tissue of host plants. The nymphs undergo several molts while feeding on the plant sap. The life cycle is heavily dependent on ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the development rate and increasing the number of generations per season.

Control measures. Protecting crops requires an integrated pest management strategy:

  • Selection and planting of maize hybrids that exhibit resistance or tolerance to the Maize Streak Virus.
  • Applying systemic insecticides when threshold levels of leafhoppers are detected in the field.
  • Implementing good agricultural practices, including the removal of volunteer plants and grasses that serve as viral reservoirs.
  • Optimizing planting dates to minimize the overlap between the peak leafhopper flight and the most susceptible stages of maize development.
