American birch sawfly

Taxonomic classification. The American birch sawfly, scientifically known as Cimbex americana, belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Cimbicidae. It is recognized as one of the largest sawflies in North America, often mistaken for a hornet or large wasp due to its robust size and coloration, though it is harmless to humans.

Host plants. The larvae of this species are foliage feeders that specialize on various deciduous trees. Their primary hosts include willow, birch, poplar, elm, and maple. In nurseries and landscape settings, heavy infestations can result in significant defoliation, particularly on younger, more vulnerable trees.

Life cycle and biology. This pest completes one generation per year. Winter is spent as prepupae in tough, papery cocoons located within the soil or deep litter layer at the base of the host tree. Adults emerge in early summer. After mating, females utilize their saw-like ovipositor to insert eggs into leaf tissue, typically selecting the underside of the leaves.

Damage and impact. The larvae, often referred to as false caterpillars, are highly destructive. Early instars typically feed gregariously, causing skeletonization of leaves, while later instars consume the entire leaf lamina, leaving only the midribs and petioles. Extensive defoliation stresses the tree, making it susceptible to secondary pests and pathogens, and reducing its overall aesthetic value.

Control measures. Effective management of Cimbex americana involves a combination of strategies:

• Manual removal: Hand-picking larvae or pruning infested branches during early stages of the outbreak.
• Cultural control: Cultivating the soil under host trees in autumn to expose or bury overwintering cocoons.
• Biological control: Encouraging natural predators, such as birds, predatory bugs, and parasitic wasps.
• Chemical intervention: Applying registered insecticides during the early larval stages when they are most vulnerable to contact or systemic treatments.
