Palaeocimbex is a genus of sawflies belonging to the family Cimbicidae within the order Hymenoptera. These insects are characterized by their relatively large size and clubbed antennae, which distinguish them from many other smaller sawfly species. While they are not always considered primary agricultural threats, their larvae can cause significant aesthetic and physiological damage to plants when population densities rise.

These pests primarily target the foliage of various broad-leaved trees and shrubs. The larvae possess strong mandibles capable of consuming leaf tissue rapidly. In agricultural settings, they are observed on plants belonging to the Rosaceae family and various ornamental species, where heavy feeding can lead to significant biomass loss and weakened host vitality.

The life cycle of Palaeocimbex involves complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females utilize a specialized saw-like ovipositor to insert eggs directly into the leaf tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae, often referred to as false caterpillars, begin feeding immediately. Once they reach maturity, they typically descend to the soil or find protected crevices to form a cocoon and pupate.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily characterized by skeletonized leaves or large, irregular notches along the leaf margins. Intense feeding by a colony of larvae can result in complete defoliation of branches. Such damage forces the plant to divert stored energy reserves for re-foliation, which consequently impacts flowering and fruit development in subsequent seasons.
