Birch sawfly

Systematic position: Cimbex lutea is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Cimbicidae family, often referred to as club-horned sawflies. These insects are distinguished by their relatively large size and distinctive morphology, with adults often mimicking the appearance of large hornets to deter predators.

Host plants and damage: The primary host plant for this species is birch (Betula), though it is also found on willow and poplar. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which are voracious leaf-eaters. Intense defoliation during the growing season can cause significant stress to trees, impacting their vitality and reducing overall wood production in managed forest stands.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is holometabolous, consisting of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females insert eggs into the leaf tissues of host plants. Once hatched, the larvae feed extensively on leaves before dropping to the ground to pupate. They typically spend the winter in the soil within a tough, parchment-like cocoon, emerging as adults in the following spring.

Nature of damage: Feeding starts from the edges of the leaves or by skeletonizing the tissue. As larvae grow, they become capable of devouring entire leaves, leaving only the primary veins intact. During heavy infestations, an entire birch tree can be stripped of its foliage, which severely impacts the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and store reserves for the following season.

Control measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Cimbex lutea. Strategies include regular monitoring for egg-laying scars in the spring and early detection of young larval colonies. Chemical control with specific insecticides should be used selectively to avoid harming beneficial insects. Maintaining healthy, diverse tree stands and encouraging natural predators, such as insectivorous birds and parasitic wasps, can significantly keep populations in check.
