Systematic position: The conifer giant aphid (Cinara pilosa) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest species that thrives on coniferous trees, often causing economic damage to forests and nurseries.
Host plants: This aphid species primarily infests the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). They are typically found in dense clusters on the bark of young stems and branches, utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the tree's sap throughout the growing season.
Biology and life cycle: The species overwinters in the egg stage, which are laid on pine needles. In early spring, nymphs emerge and develop into apterous (wingless) fundatrices. Throughout the summer, winged adults are produced, facilitating the infestation of new trees. The cycle concludes with the production of sexual individuals in late autumn to ensure overwintering.
Nature of damage and harmfulness: The direct damage is caused by sap removal, which weakens the host tree and stunts new growth. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats needles and hampers photosynthesis. Heavy infestations can lead to premature needle drop and increased vulnerability to secondary pests and pathogens.
Control measures: Management strategies include regular monitoring of tree stands, especially in spring. When chemical intervention is required, systemic insecticides are most effective for controlling aphid colonies.
