Description

Cinaropsis laricis is a specialist pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is widely recognized in forestry and horticulture as a significant threat to Larix (larch) species, directly impacting tree health by feeding on nutrient-rich phloem sap.

The primary hosts for this aphid are various larch species. The insects prefer to colonize young, tender shoots and twigs. By extracting substantial amounts of sap, they weaken the host plant, resulting in reduced vigor and, in severe infestations, leading to branch dieback and stunted growth.

The life cycle of this species is highly synchronized with the phenology of the host tree. It overwinters in the egg stage, typically found in crevices of the tree bark. As spring temperatures rise, the nymphs emerge and establish colonies, quickly multiplying through successive generations to increase their numbers during the growing season.

Damage caused by Cinaropsis laricis is twofold. Direct damage occurs through sap depletion, causing chlorosis and premature needle drop. Indirect damage arises from the excretion of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, coating the needles and hindering photosynthetic processes.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for effective control. These include monitoring tree health, promoting biodiversity to encourage natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings, and the selective application of systemic insecticides when populations exceed economic or aesthetic thresholds.
