Description
The ash weevil (Cionus fraxini) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This small beetle is strictly associated with ash trees (genus Fraxinus), which serve as both its primary food source and habitat throughout its life cycle.
The host range is limited to ash species. While mature trees can usually withstand moderate infestation, younger trees or those already stressed by environmental factors are particularly vulnerable to the feeding activities of both adult beetles and their larvae.
The biology of Cionus fraxini involves a typical holometabolous life cycle. Adults overwinter in protected sites such as bark crevices or soil litter. Upon the arrival of spring, they emerge to feed on young leaves. Females lay eggs on leaf surfaces, and the emerging larvae begin to consume the leaf parenchyma.
The characteristic damage caused by this pest is leaf skeletonization. Larvae feed on the chlorophyll-containing tissue, leaving only the veins intact. This results in the browning and eventual premature abscission of leaves, which can negatively impact the tree's photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor during the growing season.
