Citrus fruit borer

The citrus fruit borer (Citripestis) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is a highly destructive pest that specifically targets citrus orchards. Given its ability to rapidly infest developing fruit, it poses a significant economic challenge to citrus growers worldwide, particularly in regions with warm, humid climates.

This pest affects a wide range of citrus species, including lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which bore into the fruit shortly after hatching. Once inside, the larvae feed on the internal tissues, causing the fruit to yellow and drop prematurely, which leads to substantial yield reductions.

The life cycle of Citripestis consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female moth lays eggs on the surface of young fruits or sepals. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the fruit rind. After completing their development, they usually emerge and move to the soil or crevices in the tree bark to pupate inside a protective cocoon, awaiting the next generation's emergence.

Visible damage is often identified by the presence of larval excrement (frass) at the entry points on the fruit surface. These entry holes not only cause direct physical damage but also facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, leading to rot. Consequently, infested fruit becomes unmarketable and unsuitable for export or fresh consumption.

Effective management and control strategies include:

• Using pheromone traps to monitor adult flight activity and time insecticide applications precisely.
• Implementing strict orchard sanitation by collecting and burying infested, fallen fruit to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
• Applying targeted insecticides during the early larval stage, before they successfully penetrate the fruit tissue.
• Promoting biological control through the conservation and release of natural enemies such as parasitic wasps that target eggs or larvae.
