Citrus fruit borer

Citripestis eutraphera is a moth species belonging to the Pyralidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Known as a significant citrus pest, this insect causes severe economic damage to citrus orchards in Southeast Asia. Due to its cryptic feeding habits, it remains one of the most challenging pests to manage in commercial citrus cultivation.

The host range of this pest is primarily focused on various citrus species, including sweet orange, lime, and pomelo. The larvae are specialized to feed on the reproductive parts of the plant, primarily targeting the developing ovaries and ripening fruits. In severe infestations, the larvae can compromise the structural integrity of the fruit, leading to significant yield loss.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females typically oviposit on the surface of young fruits. Once the larvae emerge, they bore into the fruit to feed on the interior tissues and seeds. The larval stage is the most damaging phase, as they remain protected inside the fruit for the duration of their development.

Damage assessment reveals boreholes on the fruit surface, often surrounded by frass and webbing. These entry points significantly reduce the marketability of the produce. Furthermore, the internal feeding creates pathways for secondary fungal and bacterial infections, which frequently cause the fruit to drop prematurely or rot before harvesting, leading to substantial economic waste.

Recommended management strategies for the citrus fruit borer include:

• Implementing monitoring programs using pheromone traps to time the application of controls.
• Strict orchard sanitation, including the prompt removal and disposal of infested fruit to eliminate larvae.
• Application of targeted insecticides during the peak periods of adult flight and egg-laying.
