Citrus fruit borer

The citrus fruit borer (Citripestis sagittiferella) is a severe agricultural pest belonging to the Pyralidae family and the order Lepidoptera. It is considered a major threat to citrus production in Southeast Asia, targeting various fruits such as lime, lemon, pomelo, and orange by boring into the fruit interior.

The adult moth lays eggs on the surface of young fruits. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the fruit rind, reaching the pulp. This behavior protects the larvae from most surface-applied pesticides, making Citripestis sagittiferella a notoriously difficult pest to control effectively in commercial orchards.

Its life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larval stage is the most destructive, lasting several weeks depending on environmental conditions. Larvae pass through multiple instars within the fruit, consuming the internal tissues, before pupating either inside the fallen fruit or within the soil debris beneath the host tree.

The economic impact of this pest is profound, as the infestation leads to significant fruit drop and renders the remaining fruits unmarketable due to internal damage, excrement contamination, and secondary rot caused by opportunistic fungi and bacteria. In severe cases, infestations can lead to complete yield failure.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for effective control:

• Monitoring adult populations using sex pheromone traps to time chemical interventions.
• Strict sanitation, including the regular collection and disposal of infested fallen fruit.
• Application of systemic insecticides directed at the egg-laying period.
