Description
The citrus fruit borer (Citripestis sagittiferella) is a severe agricultural pest belonging to the Pyralidae family and the order Lepidoptera. It is considered a major threat to citrus production in Southeast Asia, targeting various fruits such as lime, lemon, pomelo, and orange by boring into the fruit interior.
The adult moth lays eggs on the surface of young fruits. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the fruit rind, reaching the pulp. This behavior protects the larvae from most surface-applied pesticides, making Citripestis sagittiferella a notoriously difficult pest to control effectively in commercial orchards.
Its life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The larval stage is the most destructive, lasting several weeks depending on environmental conditions.
