Citrus weevil

Citriphaga mixta is a specialized insect pest belonging to the family Curculionidae (weevils) within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant threat to citrus production in subtropical regions, where it impacts both the structural integrity and the productivity of the trees. Due to its cryptic behavior, the pest often remains unnoticed until significant damage to the plant tissue has already occurred.

The primary hosts of this weevil include various species of the Citrus genus. It displays a strong preference for tender young shoots, buds, and fruit stalks. This dietary focus leads to substantial economic losses in commercial orchards, as damaged shoots often fail to produce viable flowers or fruits, directly impacting the overall yield quality and quantity.

The biological cycle of Citriphaga mixta is closely synchronized with the growth stages of its host plants. Females typically deposit eggs within sheltered areas such as the bases of buds or small crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin feeding, boring into the plant stems. This internal feeding pattern provides protection from many contact-based pesticides and environmental stressors.

The damage caused by this pest is characterized by stunted growth, distortion of foliage, and necrotic lesions on branches. The larval feeding disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to wilting and poor nutrient distribution. Furthermore, the boreholes created by the larvae serve as entry points for various pathogenic fungi, which can exacerbate the decline of the affected tree.

Effective management strategies against this pest require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
