Anachoreta moth

The Anachoreta moth (lat. Clostera anachoreta) is a significant pest of woody plants, belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Notodontidae. This insect is widely distributed across forest and forest-steppe zones, posing a serious threat to green spaces, urban parks, forest belts, and tree nurseries.

The primary host plants for this species are members of the Salicaceae family. The pest predominantly infests various species of poplar and willow, though it is occasionally found on aspen. During outbreaks, the larvae are capable of defoliating entire tree crowns in a very short period, which significantly weakens the tree's overall vitality.

The life cycle of the species consists of the egg, larval (caterpillar), pupal, and adult stages. The insects typically overwinter as pupae inside cocoons attached to bark crevices or hidden within leaf litter. The flight of adult moths begins in the spring, after which females deposit eggs in clusters on the undersides of the leaves of host plants.

The damage caused is characterized by the intensive feeding of the caterpillars on leaf blades. Early instars skeletonize the leaves, consuming the soft tissues and leaving only the veins intact, while older larvae consume entire leaves, often leaving only the petioles. Severe infestations lead to premature defoliation, reduced wood increment, and increased susceptibility to secondary pests and diseases.

Protection measures require an integrated approach combining silvicultural and chemical strategies. It is essential to manage the site by removing plant debris where cocoons may overwinter. During periods of high pest population, contact-stomach insecticides are effective, as well as biological preparations based on entomopathogenic bacteria, which provide an eco-friendly solution for managing infestations.
