Description

Cnephasia is a genus of moths belonging to the Tortricidae family. These insects are well-known agricultural pests, often referred to as leafrollers. Their ability to adapt to various environments makes them significant threats to both large-scale farming and small-scale orchards throughout temperate climate zones.

This genus is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of host plants. The larvae are known to attack cereals, flax, vegetables, and various fruit trees. Due to their wide host range, they can survive on weeds if cultivated crops are not available, which makes them difficult to eliminate from a farming ecosystem entirely.

The life cycle of Cnephasia usually consists of one generation per year. They typically overwinter as young larvae in protected areas, such as bark crevices or soil debris. Management of Cnephasia requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as removing weeds and crop residues, help to minimize overwintering sites. Chemical control involves the application of appropriate insecticides during the early larval stage when the pests are most vulnerable and before they construct dense webbing that limits chemical penetration.
