Description

The Flax tortrix (Cnephasia asseclana) belongs to the Tortricidae family within the order Lepidoptera. Despite its common name, it is a highly polyphagous pest capable of infesting a wide range of economically important plants throughout the temperate climate zones.

This moth is known to feed on various crops, including cereals, flax, sugar beet, potatoes, and various legumes. Because it is highly adaptable, it frequently shifts between different hosts, making it a persistent challenge for integrated pest management programs in diverse farming systems.

The insect typically completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter in the first instar stage inside silk-lined cocoons hidden within bark crevices or other sheltered spots. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae disperse using wind and begin feeding on developing foliage.

Typical damage occurs when larvae spin webs over leaves, causing them to fold, roll, or become malformed. By mining leaf tissue or boring into buds and stems, they severely stunt plant growth, reduce overall crop vigor, and can lead to significant yield losses if left uncontrolled.

Control strategies involve both cultural and chemical methods. Cultural practices, such as maintaining weed-free fields, are essential to reduce early-season population pressure. Chemical control using approved insecticides should be applied during the early larval stage when the pest is most vulnerable before it hides inside protected leaf rolls.
