Description
Taxonomic position. The omnivorous leaf tier (Latin: Cnephasia longana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its adaptability and ability to infest a wide variety of botanical species, making it a challenge for growers worldwide.
Host plants. This pest is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plants. Its host range includes fruit trees, berry crops such as strawberries and raspberries, various vegetable crops, and ornamental plants like carnations and tulips, causing potential economic losses in both commercial and private gardens.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically has one generation per year. Larvae in the first instar overwinter under protective silk shelters on bark or debris. In early spring, they emerge to feed on fresh growth, developing through several instars before pupating within rolled leaves.
Damage and harmfulness. The larvae cause characteristic damage by spinning leaves together with silk threads to create protective webbed nests. They feed on the internal tissues, often destroying terminal buds, flowers, and young fruits. This activity inhibits plant growth, leads to malformed produce, and significantly reduces overall marketability of the crop.
Protection measures. Effective control requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This involves regular field scouting and the use of pheromone traps to time chemical interventions.
