Description

The grey flax tortrix (Cnephasia stephensiana) is a moth species belonging to the family Tortricidae. Adults are small, with a wingspan of approximately 20–24 mm, characterized by grey-brown forewings featuring intricate, darker patterns that allow them to blend into their surrounding habitat during the day.

This insect is recognized as a significant polyphagous pest. While it is predominantly known for damaging flax crops, its host range includes cereals, legumes, various weeds, and several broad-leaved plants. This broad host range allows the species to persist in various agricultural landscapes.

The life cycle follows a standard pattern for tortricids, comprising egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The insect overwinters as young larvae within dense silken hibernacula located in bark crevices or under plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge to feed on the apical growth of young plants.

The damage is primarily caused by larval feeding, which involves skeletonizing leaves and webbing them together, often boring into the plant's terminal shoot. This activity leads to stunted plant height, secondary branching, and severe damage to flower buds, which significantly impacts seed yield and fiber quality.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Control measures include removing host weeds from field margins, which reduces initial infestation levels. When economic thresholds are met, the application of selective insecticides during the early larval stage is the most reliable method to prevent extensive crop loss.
