Description
The genus Coccidula belongs to the ladybird beetle family (Coccinellidae) within the order Coleoptera. While most members of this family are recognized as beneficial entomophagous insects that feed on aphids, specific species such as Coccidula scutellata can exhibit feeding behaviors that occasionally cause damage to plant tissues, particularly when their primary food sources are scarce.
This pest prefers moist environments and is frequently found on wetland vegetation, such as reeds and sedges, as well as on various agricultural crops grown in damp soil conditions. In agroecosystems, their potential for damage becomes significant during periods of population outbreaks, where insects may feed on young plant shoots and foliage.
The life cycle undergoes complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults overwinter in plant debris, under tree bark, or within leaf litter. In the spring, after soil temperatures rise, females deposit eggs onto host plants. Larvae pass through several instars while feeding actively, eventually pupating directly on the leaves.
The damage pattern involves skeletonizing the leaf lamina or creating small feeding holes, which reduces the plant's total photosynthetic capacity. Severe infestations can lead to stunted growth and weakened plant health, creating entry points for secondary fungal pathogens that further compromise the crop yield and vitality.
Protection measures prioritize cultural practices, including rigorous weed control, crop rotation, and moisture management in fields. If populations reach economic injury levels, the use of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi, or targeted applications of approved insecticides may be necessary to manage the pest pressure effectively.
