Description
Systematic position: The American screwworm fly (Cochliomyia americana) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. It is a highly destructive parasitic fly, recognized as a serious threat to livestock and wildlife due to its obligate nature of feeding on living flesh.
Biology and lifecycle: The adult fly is metallic blue-green in color with three distinct dark stripes on its thorax. Females lay masses of eggs in wounds or body orifices of warm-blooded hosts. Within 24 hours, larvae emerge and begin to tunnel deep into living tissue, using their hook-like mouthparts to feed, causing significant trauma to the host.
Damage character and economic impact: The larvae cause primary myiasis, which involves the rapid destruction of healthy tissue. This results in extreme pain, severe infections, and often death of the animal if untreated. Economically, this pest causes massive losses in the meat and dairy industries by reducing productivity and increasing veterinary costs.
Host range: This fly does not target crops but is a major pest for all warm-blooded animals. Cattle, sheep, horses, and dogs are frequent victims. The ability of the fly to adapt to various environments makes it a significant concern for regional animal health security.
