Screwworm fly

The screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. Unlike other blowflies, this species is an obligate parasite of warm-blooded animals. In the agricultural sector, it is recognized as a devastating pest that significantly impacts livestock production by causing severe health issues and economic losses for farmers.

The biology of this species is uniquely adapted to living tissues. Adult females are attracted to open wounds, umbilical stumps, or mucous membranes of hosts. They deposit eggs in batches, which hatch into larvae within 12 to 24 hours. The larvae are the primary damaging stage, as they utilize specialized mouthparts to feed on living flesh, creating deep pockets within the host's body.

The life cycle encompasses eggs, three larval instars, pupae, and adults. The larval stage lasts approximately one week. Upon maturity, the larvae exit the host and drop to the soil, where they burrow to pupate. The duration of the entire cycle depends on environmental conditions, primarily temperature and humidity, which determine how quickly the fly population can regenerate in a specific area.

Damage caused by this insect is known as myiasis. Larvae burrow into the skin, causing intense irritation and tissue destruction. As they feed, they create a characteristic wound pattern that can become massive if untreated. This damage is not only painful for the animal but also increases vulnerability to secondary bacterial infections, leading to weight loss, reduced production, or death if not addressed.

Effective control strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Livestock management involves inspecting animals for injuries and applying protective medicaments to wounds. On a regional scale, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), which involves releasing millions of sterile flies to prevent reproduction in the wild population, has proven to be the most effective method for suppressing or eradicating the species in many countries.
