Cochlochila

Cochlochila is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs. These insects are easily identified by the intricate, net-like, or lace-like appearance of their pronotum and hemelytra. The most economically significant species within this genus, such as Cochlochila bullita, are recognized as serious agricultural pests in tropical and subtropical climates.

The primary hosts of Cochlochila include various plants in the Lamiaceae family. This pest is particularly problematic for producers of culinary and medicinal herbs, including basil, mint, lavender, and sage. Because these crops are often grown in high-density systems, a localized infestation of lace bugs can rapidly spread across an entire field or greenhouse facility.

The biology of Cochlochila involves an incomplete metamorphosis consisting of eggs, multiple nymphal instars, and adults. The pests typically congregate on the undersides of leaves, which provides them with protection from predators and environmental stressors. The eggs are often embedded directly into the leaf tissue, making them difficult to manage with surface-applied control agents.

Damage caused by Cochlochila is the direct result of phloem and mesophyll cell sap extraction. The feeding sites appear on the upper leaf surface as small, pale yellow chlorotic spots (stippling). Over time, these spots coalesce, leading to severe yellowing, tissue necrosis, and leaf abscission. Furthermore, the presence of dark excrement spots on the foliage significantly degrades the commercial value of the crop.
