Passion vine lace bug

The passion vine lace bug (Corythaica passiflorae) is a small sap-sucking insect belonging to the family Tingidae within the order Hemiptera. These insects are distinguished by their ornate, lace-like wing venation and specific head structures. They are known as significant pests specifically targeting plants in the Passifloraceae family, particularly the passion fruit vine.

The primary host for this pest is Passiflora edulis (passion fruit). Because the lace bug feeds on the foliage, commercial growers often face yield losses if infestations are not managed properly. The insect is predominantly found in tropical and subtropical regions where passion fruit is cultivated on a large scale.

The life cycle of Corythaica passiflorae involves an egg, several nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Eggs are typically laid in clusters on the underside of the leaves. As they develop through nymphal instars, both nymphs and adults extract sap from the plant tissues, which disrupts the normal physiological processes of the leaf.
