Lace bug Corythaica

Corythaica

Description

Systematic position. The genus Corythaica belongs to the family Tingidae (lace bugs), order Hemiptera. These insects are easily recognized by the intricate, net-like appearance of their hemelytra and pronotum. Several species within this genus act as significant agricultural pests, particularly in warmer climates where they thrive throughout the growing season.

Host crops and impact. These pests primarily target Solanaceae family members, including eggplant, tomato, potato, and pepper. They are also known to infest cotton in some regions. By feeding on plant sap, they disrupt the normal physiological functions of the plant, often leading to reduced yield quality and significant biomass loss if infestations remain unchecked.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are usually inserted into the leaf tissue, specifically on the underside. Development is temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations within a single season. Adults and nymphs generally remain on the underside of the leaves, making them difficult to detect during early stages of infestation.

Damage symptoms. Feeding activity results in chlorotic spots or stippling on the upper leaf surface. Over time, these spots coalesce, leading to severe yellowing, browning, and premature leaf drop. The presence of dark, sticky fecal spots on the underside of leaves is a hallmark indicator of a Corythaica infestation, distinguishing it from simple nutrient deficiencies or fungal infections.

Protection measures. Effective control requires a combination of monitoring and intervention. It is critical to:

  • Regularly scout the undersides of leaves for nymph clusters.
  • Remove and destroy crop residues that may harbor overwintering adults.
  • Apply contact or systemic insecticides targeting the foliage when thresholds are met.
  • Utilize biological control agents like predators and parasitoids that occur naturally in the ecosystem.
