Eight-spotted Coelophora

Eight-spotted Coelophora (Coelophora octosignata) is a species of beetle belonging to the family Coccinellidae, order Coleoptera. While the family is widely known for predatory species, this specific member shows tendencies that can be harmful to crops, necessitating vigilance from agronomists to manage its population effectively within agricultural settings.

This pest is known to affect various plant species, with a particular affinity for members of the Solanaceae family and other vegetable crops. The larvae and adults primarily feed on the foliage, which can cause significant growth retardation, especially in young plants that lack the vigor to withstand heavy defoliation during the critical growth stages.

The lifecycle of this pest is typical for Coleoptera, passing through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect thrives in warm environmental conditions which stimulate rapid development and metabolic activity. The presence of multiple generations per season in favorable climates makes it a persistent challenge for commercial farmers during the warm months.

Damage is characterized by irregular holes and skeletonization of the leaf tissue. By destroying the plant’s photosynthetic apparatus, the beetle causes severe physiological stress to the host plants. This leads to a decline in overall plant health, reduced vigor, and a subsequent loss of harvest quality and quantity, which can be economically detrimental.
