The Ivy bee (Colletes hederae) is a solitary mining bee species belonging to the family Colletidae. Recognized as a relatively new species in Northern Europe, it has rapidly expanded its range. While sometimes mistakenly identified as a garden pest, it is essential to categorize it as a beneficial pollinator rather than a threat to agricultural productivity.
The life cycle of the Ivy bee is perfectly synchronized with the flowering period of Hedera helix (common ivy). Emerging in late summer and autumn, these bees are seen when most other pollinators have already ceased their activity. Females build their nests in the soil, often favoring sandy or loose banks exposed to the sun, where they create tunnels for their brood.
Regarding its impact on vegetation, the Ivy bee is entirely harmless. It does not possess the mouthparts or dietary requirements to damage crops, leaves, fruits, or roots.
